Solar PV Grants

SEAI supports homeowners to install solar electricity systems:

  • Grant amount per kWp installed:
    • €700 for each kWp up to 2 kWp
    • €200 per kWp for additional capacity up to 4kWp
  • Maximum grant: €1,800 for systems of 4 kWp or more.

€900 per KW installed up to 2kw and €300 per kw for further 2kw when you install a battery.

Battery Storage Grants

€600, so you can use your electricity at night or in the event of a Power Cut.

Up to €1,800 of a Grant Now Available in Ireland through Solar Stream IE.

EV (Electric Vehicle) Charger Grants

SEAI offers grants to support the installation of home electric vehicle chargers.

  • Home Charger Grant: Up to €300 towards the purchase and installation of an EV charging point at your home.

This grant makes it more affordable to install a smart EV charger, and applicants must use a Safe Electric-approved installer and meet the eligibility criteria detailed on the SEAI website.

There are also separate grants available for apartment charging units and other EV charging infrastructure under different parts of the scheme.

Solar Hot Water / Heating Grants

Under SEAI’s Individual Energy Upgrade Grants:

  • A grant of up to €1,200 is available for solar thermal hot water systems (solar water heating), helping homeowners reduce their reliance on conventional heating and lower energy bills.

Solar hot water grants are different from solar PV grants – they specifically help with heating water using solar thermal panels.

BER (Building Energy Rating) Assessment Grants

  • A BER assessment grant (covering the cost of assessment after upgrades) may be available under the Better Energy Homes / Home Energy Upgrade Schemes, typically up to around €50 once works are completed.

BER assessments are often required to confirm the energy performance improvement after installation of solar or other energy upgrades.

Any installation over 2kWp must install a battery.

The term ‘solar panel’ is often used interchangeably to describe the panels that generate electricity and those that generate hot water.

Solar panels that produce hot water are known as solar thermal collectors or solar hot water collectors.

Solar panels that produce electricity are known as solar photovoltaic (PV) modules. These panels generate DC electricity when exposed to light.

Solar PV is the rooftop solar you see on homes and businesses. PV or photovoltaic solar panels turn daylight into free electricity and provide you with free energy and free electricity to power your TV, kettle, toaster, phone charger, radio, oven and so on.

A domestic solar PV system consists of a number of solar panels mounted to your roof (or in your garden) and connected into the electrical loads within your building.

The solar panels generate DC (direct current – like a battery) electricity, which is then converted in an inverter to AC (alternating current – like the electricity in your domestic socket). Solar PV systems are rated in kilowatts (kW). A 1kW solar PV system would require 3 or 4 solar panels on your roof.

Any excess electricity produced can be stored in a battery, or other storage solution like your hot water immersion tank. It can also be exported from your house into the electrical network on your street.
